Collingwood Cup: MIC v RCS

Mary Immaculate vs. Royal College of Surgeons (3-3 AET, 5-4 on penalties) Wednesday February 23rd 2011.

After elimination from the Spillane Cup, Mary I were drawn in the Duggan Cup final against RCSI with the hope of bringing a 3rd trophy in as many years back to Limerick. In a game with a very high level of pressure and mental concentration needed RCSI drew first blood as they slid a well placed shot past Carroll on goals. With this setback in mind Mary I attacked the Surgeons goal with everything they had and eventually got reward when Henaghan passed to Higgins who slotted into an empty net. The second half started with all the intensiveness of the first and after a quick free kick from Lane and Higgins, Henaghan was able to rise high and head the ball to put Mary I ahead for the first time in the match. The lead was sorted lived as miscommunication in the defence allowed the Surgeons to equalize after only 3 minutes. Both sides probed at the opposing defenses in the hope of the winner and Mary I were convinced they had it when man of the match Peter Lane drove a Henaghan cross into the net courtesy of a deflection off the back of a RCSI defender. Hearts were in mouths as RCSI were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box late into injury time which the converted to level. So the final went to extra time where Mary I were unlucky not to score due to several chances from a variety of players and the reduction of RSCI to 10 men after their centre back received marching orders for fouling Henaghan 20 yards from goal . The lottery of a penalty shoot-out followed, but due to successful kicks by Higgins, Keenan, Sheehan, Lane and Gleeson, Mary I lifted the Duggan Cup for the 2nd year in a row.

Mary I: Carroll, Kennedy (Keenan), O’Laighin (Capt.), Hutton, Lynskey, McGettigan (Rocliffe), Sheehan, Sheahan (Gleeson), Higgins, Lane, Henaghan.
