GAA Prez Reveals Plans To Trial Score Detection Technology

Uachtaran Chumann Luthchleas Gael Criostóir Ó Cuana has revealed that the Association is planning to trial the use of score detection technology at a match in Croke Park in the near future.

“We are looking at the moment and we would hope to trial it in a game in Croke Park in the near future.”

Last December Coiste Bainistí sanctioned a feasibility study on the possible use of the technology.

The Uachtrán says the system could be trialed at one of Dublin’s remaining games in the ‘Dublin Spring Series’.

However, he said that it will not be used in this year’s Championship and that the costing of introducing it for all inter-county games will be discussed at a meeting in May.

“We are looking at the moment and we would hope to trial it in a game in Croke Park in the near future,” said the Uachtarán, who was speaking at the launch of the 2011 Cadbury GAA Football U21 Championship on Tuesday.

“We are looking at the Dublin games (the Dublin Spring Series) at the moment. We are testing it to see how it works.

“We will have a meeting in May to analyse that and discuss the whole costing and the feasibility of having it at all of our grounds.

“It won’t be in this year’s Championship, but it is something for the future and something we will look very seriously at.

“It has to be right and to be effective and we have to be able to do it at all of our county games because Croke Park isn’t the only option.”

The Uachtarán said the trial will look at all aspects of the system.

“We will use this is the game for a proper trial and we’ll have the referee linked up as well. It’s not a proper feasibility study if you don’t look at everything properly,” he added.

“We want it with a crowd in Croke Park so we can better judge it. We will give it a proper evaluation and then make a proper decision.”
