It wasn't something I was looking forward to. Doing my best to disappear into my seat as excited twelve to fifteen-year-old girls skipped past with their popcorn and coke, some dolled up in the vein hope that Justin would reach down, Morten Harket style, and pull them onto the stage with him, I knew that this was the most pointless review I'll ever write - after Transformers, Sex And The City, Mamma Mia, Twilight and, yes, everything else I've written - as fans will go regardless of the opinion here. But it came as a total surprise that this was quite fun, but only because of the bubbly atmosphere in the theatre.
Not a documentary, not even an expose, but a love-in, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never is a ten-day countdown to his concert at Madison Square Garden. Flicking back and forth from his on stage antics to photos of him as a baby (which got some 'aws' from the girls) to a little boy (more 'aws'), Never Say Never hardly lets Justin get through a full tune before interrupting the music with his Youtube clips and interviews with his mother, family, friends, showbiz celebs and those on the road with him. And, of course, his fans.
A series of 'interviews' that climb over each other to say how great Justin is, it's the latter that works best. It was fun watching the audience watching the snippets of the fans, saying exactly what they wanted to.
