Adopt a Class - Volunteers Wanted

MISU, in conjuntion with ULSU, are hoping to run an 'Adopt a Class' programme this semester in schools in disadvantaged ares of Limerick and is looking for volunteers.

The classes will be 4th, 5th and 6th class. The programme is open to students of any course in Mary I.

If interested, you can call down to the SU and sign up.

The closing date for receipt of signatures of interest is Tuesday March 6th.

It is currently envisioned that groups of five students would go into a classroom and spend an hour with the kids doing something that may or may not link to something they were doing earlier that day. For example, if the children had been doing mapping in Geography earlier that day, volunteers might work with the children on their maps. Alternatively, the teacher may feel that a group exercise would be better and the volunteers would do something with the class for the hour.

A lot of children from disadvantaged areas are disenfranchised about attending college so the point of this in the long run is to break down the barrier so that a link to college is created and they feel like they could go when they are older. The aim is that a relationship would build up over time and a positive image of college is created in their mind.

The hope is that the students would visit the schools two or three times a semester and then the children would also come to the colleges (UL and Mary I) to be shown around and so build on the foundation that college is accessible to them.

If this pilot programme is successful, we hope to do it every semester.
