Online Petition to Ruairi Quinn, re. Allowances Cut

With the protest taking place today in Dublin, here is the link to the online petition aganist the cuts in regards to teacher's allowances:

Please sign this petition for Minister for Education & Skills Ruairi Quinn to show your support and that you denounce such measures.

As it stands the government have taken the decision to temporarily not pay allowances to new teachers with exceptional qualifications, including Primary Degrees, Masters' Degrees, Doctorates etc. as well as allowances such as yard duty, island bus, gaeltacht and gaelscoil.

This means newly qualified teachers will be earning less than those in the next room if they graduated the year before.

MIC beat UL

Huge congratulations to Noel O’Connor (Manager) and the MIC Soccer team who beat the University of Limerick for the first time ever earlier today in the quarter final of the Collingwood Cup. The Collingwood Cup, which is the premier University soccer championship, is this year  being hosted by UL and earlier today the MIC soccer team came back from being one goal down to winning the game two goals to one with the all-important  goals being scored by John Hutton and Cormac Crowe.

The first Collingwood was held in 1914 and is by some distance Ireland’s oldest all-island senior Soccer Competition. This year marks the 25th Anniversary of Limerick first hosting the event. This year, for the first time ever, Collingwood matches will be played in County Clare as UL’s state of the art new synthetic pitches and brand new Pavilion in Cappavilla are scheduled to host matches over the course of the week.

The games, which commenced on Monday will continue tomorrow with Mary Immaculate College scheduled to play either UCC or NUIG  at 2pm and the 2012 Collingwood cup final will kick off at 2PM, Thursday February 23rd, on the University Bowl.

Well done and best of luck!

Limerick Institute of Technology’s Audio Video Department have decided to promote video production in the mid-west region of Ireland with the 3rd Annual Film Festival, running from 26th to 28th April 2012.

This is the brainchild of Assistant Lecturer, Simon McGuire, who believes that this type of festival and competition give second and third level students as well as other film makers a chance to show off their talents to industry professionals, their peers and families with the latest technology available.

After the success of the first two years of the Festival, it was decided to focus the festival to a series of events targeting the future of the industry. Consisting of an exhibition of Professional equipment and industry, workshops by industry professionals, film viewings and an awards night for the film competition. Last year the competition open to the general public as well as students from third level institutions from around the country. This year the competition is also open to second level students who are creating their own videos either in class or in their spare time.

As in previous years we believe that the festival should be a festival and not just a competition. The judging panel will consist of members of the professional media industry representing both technical and creative areas. As well as their role of judging they are also being asked to give keynote talks or workshops to students, on current work practices and industry standards as well as discuss new technologies and equipment.

The venue will be at the Millennium Theatre at Limerick Institute of Technology and the lecturing staff of the Audio and Video Department as well as the Video and Sound students will be looking after the running of this three-day event.
