Lorraine Murphy - Media In Mary I

Lorraine Murphy
BA Media and Communications & English, 2005 - 2009

Lorraine's gives the lowdown on doing Media in Mary I.

My first encounter with the media world was in Transition Year where I spent my work experience at a radio station, and loved it. It was then that I knew I wanted to study media in college. The main reason I chose to study at Mary I was due to the wide variety the course offered. As well as studying Media, I also got to study other subjects such as Music and English.

This was cool as I knew that if the “media thing” didn’t work out, I had another subject to rely on!Studying Media in Mary I is great as it covers everything from film studies, journalism, scriptwriting to television production. And while there are a lot of lectures, you also get to do really cool stuff like write scripts and articles, and produce, direct and edit your own television productions using state of the art equipment, which is a lot of fun!

Mary I also has its own radio station – Wired FM and its very own college website, misu.ie, which most Media students get involved in. Not only are these a great way to improve your skills but they’re also a brilliant way to get to know people.Another reason I chose Mary I was for its Off Campus Programme which a lot of other colleges don’t have. For this I studied Film Studies in Sweden for one semester, and worked in a PR placement for the other, giving me invaluable experience.

As a college, Mary I is a fantastic place to study. It has a warm, friendly atmosphere with each corridor guaranteeing a familiar face. The college also boasts a wealth of clubs and societies, activities and facilities, and most importantly, an unreal social life!!So before I get too sentimental about leaving this small but mighty (yes I did rob that from the Persil ad) college, I would definitely recommend anyone to study here as it’ll be the most unforgettable 4 years of your life!
